What the DreamStation 2 actually draws

The DreamStation 2 ships with a 65W power supply, but real-world power consumption is much lower during normal use. Here's what users report:

SettingPower draw8-hour runtime needs
CPAP only (no humidity, no heat)3.5-7W28-56 Wh
CPAP + humidifier (no heated tube)12-22W96-176 Wh
CPAP + humidifier + heated tube25-50W200-400 Wh
AutoCPAP (auto-adjusting)4-8W baseVaries with events

The DreamStation 2 is slightly more power-efficient than the original DreamStation, which is good news for battery users. One user on CPAPtalk measured about 33Wh per night without the humidifier — that's around 5.5 watts average.

The Medistrom Pilot-24 Lite connects to the DreamStation 2 via a DC cable (sold separately for the DS2 connector). At 97.68Wh, it's FAA-approved for carry-on and gives you 1-3 nights without the humidifier.

Runtime estimate:

  • Without humidifier: 14-28 hours (2-3 nights)
  • With humidifier: 4-8 hours (about 1 night)

Price: ~$300 (plus ~$25 for DreamStation 2 cable)

For camping and multi-night trips

The EcoFlow RIVER 2 is the sweet spot for camping. 256Wh capacity runs the DreamStation 2 for 4-7 nights without the humidifier. Charges from solar, car, or wall power. You use the DreamStation 2's regular power brick plugged into the AC outlet.

Runtime estimate:

  • Without humidifier: 36-73 hours (4-9 nights)
  • With humidifier + heat: 5-10 hours (1 night)

Price: ~$200

Jackery Explorer 240 v2

4.5

$189 – $219

Check price on Amazon

The Jackery Explorer 240 v2 works as a bedside UPS for your DreamStation 2. Keep it plugged into the wall with passthrough charging. When power goes out, it takes over automatically. 256Wh means 4+ nights of CPAP-only use.

Runtime estimate:

  • Without humidifier: 36-73 hours (4-9 nights)
  • With humidifier + heat: 5-10 hours (1 night)

Price: ~$200

Budget option

The Freedom V² CPAP Battery is a compact, CPAP-specific battery. Smaller capacity (40-50Wh) but connects via DC for maximum efficiency. Good for one night without the humidifier when you need something that fits in a carry-on.

Runtime estimate:

  • Without humidifier: 6-14 hours (1 night)

Price: ~$200

DC vs AC: which connection to use

The DreamStation 2 accepts 12V DC input directly through its barrel connector. This is a big advantage — you can skip the AC power brick entirely and go DC-direct for better efficiency.

Use the DC cable when:

  • Connecting to a 12V battery or car outlet (saves 10-15% power)
  • Camping in an RV with a 12V system
  • Using a CPAP-specific battery like the Medistrom

Use the AC outlet when:

  • Connecting to a portable power station (they already output AC)
  • Using the stock power brick is simpler

The DreamStation 2's 12V DC cord is available from Philips (~$65) or as a third-party cable on Amazon for about $15-25. The third-party cables work fine — just make sure it says "DreamStation 2 compatible."

DreamStation 2 vs original DreamStation battery compatibility

Good news: the DreamStation 2 uses the same style barrel connector as the original DreamStation. Most 12V DC cables and batteries that worked with the DreamStation 1 also work with the DreamStation 2.

One difference: the DreamStation 2's power supply is 65W (down from 80W on some original models). It draws slightly less power overall, which means better battery runtime.

If you're upgrading from a DreamStation 1 and already own a battery or 12V cable, test it with the DS2 before buying new accessories. There's a good chance it works.

Maximizing battery life

  1. Turn off the humidifier. This is the single biggest power savings. A DreamStation 2 without the humidifier draws 3.5-7W versus 25-50W with it on. Use a standalone humidifier or nasal spray instead.
  2. Turn off the heated tube. If you keep the humidifier, disabling the heated tube cuts power draw significantly.
  3. Use DC direct when possible. Bypassing the AC power brick saves 10-15% of your battery.
  4. Use ramp wisely. The ramp feature starts at low pressure and gradually increases. Lower pressure = less power during the ramp period.
  5. Check your leak rate. A poor mask fit causes air leaks, which makes the motor work harder to maintain pressure. Fix your mask fit to reduce power consumption.

The recall situation

Yes, Philips had a recall on the original DreamStation (not the DreamStation 2) related to the sound abatement foam. The DreamStation 2 was designed to address this and uses a different foam material. It's not subject to the recall.

If you're still on an original DreamStation waiting for a replacement, the battery advice here applies to both machines since they share the same power connector.
